“I Yam What I Yam & Dats What I Yam!” – Popeye, circa 1933
Oh, Popeye. What wise, wise words. There’s something so simple, yet boldly unapologetic about Popeye’s declaration.
Yes, I realize he’s a cartoon that came to life over 85 years ago, but sometimes the simple truths are the best.
We’re all here to be exactly who we are. You. Me. Your sister. Your mom. Your partner. That random stranger. Your boss or client.
YOU are exactly who you are meant to be.
Yup. That’s right. No matter what you might be thinking right now, you are exactly who you are meant to be. In business, in life, in love – you were designed to be YOU and no one else.
My friend Nat Olson, an incredible coach, has helped me realize this truth at a deeper level and I highly recommend her to anyone seeking to understand why they’re here and what they’re here to do.
With social media infiltrating almost every aspect of our lives, comparing ourselves to others is easier than ever. I actually think a lot of comparison happens on a subconscious level without us even knowing what’s going on and this is even scarier.
But back to the main point I walk to make right now…
You are YOU for a reason.
You’re supposed to be different.
You’re supposed to be unique.
You’re supposed to look different, think different, process different and act different.
Your business isn’t supposed to look like all of the other businesses out there, and neither is your social media account.
And the people in your life who you might compare yourself to, judge or idolize? They’re supposed to be exactly the way they are for a reason too. So stop worrying about everyone else and start paying more attention to yourself.
Do more of what lights you up and puts a smile on your face, then move forward one step at a time from there.
Your Challenge:
- Embrace Popeye’s simple truth as your daily mantra.
- Wake up and boldly declare, “I Yam What I Am & Dats What I Am.”
- Have a fierce sense of pride as you remember and declare that you are exactly who you are supposed to be!
- Continue to embrace and repeat this mantra anytime you find yourself slipping down the comparison trap and notice how your thoughts and actions start to shift.
